Be Your Own Marketer

The job market today is becoming saturated with young talent. Students are competing with one another all throughout college in order to land that big time job that this college education was all about. That’s the end goal right? To go through college and then get a job? Seems like a pretty simple process right?

If you answered yes to that last question, you’re already behind. You need to catch up quick. The process of selling yourself to companies after college is grueling, challenging and demanding. Students are bringing out all the stops in order to set themselves apart from one another. Everyone is looking for that competitive advantage. And if you don’t have LinkedIn, then you should go sign up for one, like now. Stop reading this and sign up for a LinkedIn. Come back and finish reading this of course, but get yourself the upper hand before it’s too late.

LinkedIn allows for individuals of all ages to establish themselves on the internet, giving them their digital profile. In today’s society the days of handing out resumes in order to sell yourself is becoming old news. People still have resumes of course, but that is just one aspect of their profile. Using LinkedIn allows for you to not only include your resume for the entire LinkedIn community to see, but you can also put characteristics and skills on your LinkedIn account that won’t fit on your resume.

There are a number of things that LinkedIn users can do with their accounts, but the most important thing is becoming connected with individuals in your specific field and with individuals who have the experience that is needed for young students to succeed. LinkedIn has recently created an app for college students as well in order to ease the search for jobs. This app allows for students to take their profile and put it out to companies within the area. In doing so, the companies can conduct keyword searches in order to find possible candidates that match their job description. This is why it is essential to include these keywords within your LinkedIn profile because employers are always searching. With the massive amount of information that employers have at their fingertips, it is important that your profile matches what they are looking for.

When it came to the start of my LinkedIn journey I had no idea what I was doing. Like a great deal of menials my age this seems to be a common problem. Not many people know HOW to use this great tool. I was fortunate, however. I had professors throughout my college career who pushed and challenged me to create a profile that was unmatched.

It all started sophomore year in college. I was taking a computer science class and one of our assignments was to become more established on-line. So we had to create a LinkedIn account. There were certain guidelines that we had to follow in order to get the highest grade possible. We had to make ourselves presentable. This is what sparked the fire.

After that class I talked with professors, mentors and employers and every single individual I talked with asked me if I had a LinkedIn account. I started to understand the importance of LinkedIn. It wasn’t until this summer, when I got my first real internship at Mohawk Global Logistics that I really started to utilize LinkedIn. I started connecting with everyone in the office. That was my strategy, connect with as many people as possible and use those connections in order to make bigger connections.

One of my most important connections was made because of a connection with a teacher here at Siena. I want nothing more than to break into the world of fashion and athletics. And after a conversation with a professor, Nike came up. I told him my aspirations to work with Nike and he said that he actually knew an individual who worked with Nike for over 20 years and that he would put me in contact with him. After making that connection my foot was in the door. And I began utilizing his connections from Nike to become more established.

Staying connected within the community is crucial. You spend so many years of your life in one place. You make so many connections with people you know and people you don’t.  You should be able to utilize these connections. LinkedIn allows for this luxury. Over the three years I’ve had LinkedIn my strategy has always been to make a face-to-face connection first and then follow up on that interaction with a connection on LinkedIn. It’s a conversation starter. It always you to stay connected. I’ve marketed myself on LinkedIn in a way that allows for myself to stay connected and active. LinkedIn allows me to be my own marketer. My profile can speak for itself. Because of this, I’m the one who writes my own future. I have the control and what I do with it is up to me. Thank you LinkedIn for allowing me to market myself in a way that is unique to myself.

Do You Want To Be Part of The Crew?

When it comes to fashion, J. Crew has been around the block a few times. They have the fashion essentials that every guy, or girl needs in their closet. Being a frequent flyer on the J. Crew express plane, I know that they not only have some of the most stylish clothes on the market, but they also aren’t afraid to throw in a deal where people can save BIG. And who doesn’t love to save money? I sure as hell know I do!

Last summer was my first taste of the real world. I had my first internship position and it was in a corporate office. That meant I had to look spiffy every day. Now my closet had some fashion essentials in there of course, but what I needed were options, a lot of options. What better place to look than J. Crew?

I went to J. Crew and wiped that store clean. Getting shirts here, pants there, ties to match. I was pulling out all of the stops. When I got to the register, the cashier asked “would you like to provide your email and save 25% today?” I think I said yes faster than she could blink her eyes. Save 25% and all I had to do was give my email?! Sign me up, literally.

Now I get emails from the J. Crew factory store at least once, twice or three times a week. They are always trying to keep me up to date on the latest sales and fashion trends. The factory store already has major savings, but when J. Crew adds on additional savings, I feel obligated to shop around their site and convert on their major deals.

One of the emails I received just last week had a subject line that read…

Screen Shot 2017-04-02 at 4.32.10 PM

And then that got me thinking, I never asked for a flash sale, but it is always in the back of my mind, J. Crew just knows. When I clicked on the link it brought me to a specific landing page, where the content matched exactly what the subject line said. There were clothes on sale that had never been for sale before and it was only for a limited time.

Screen Shot 2017-04-02 at 4.30.23 PM.png

The email was left for the customer to interpret in any way they please. With a link so vague there is the fear of missing out. If I didn’t click on the link, would I miss out on a once in a life time sale? The call to action was to click on the link and explore the vast options that the sale offered.

Based on the vagueness of the email I believe that it was send out to the entire database. There wasn’t specific content on the email for male or female customers. To give the customers a bit more of an insight into what the sale offers, they could have added a bit more content to the email in order for the customers to know what they are getting into before they click. But the question of “what does the sale offer?” always keeps the customers engaged and it give them the desire to click on the link

If J. Crew were to send out another email, I think it should have something promoting the items that may have gone fast in the sale. Letting the customers know that this isn’t the last time that they will see these kinds of deals. And for the customers who did miss out, they will make it a priority not to miss out again.

One thing that J. Crew does well in their email marketing promotion is their engaging subject lines. Another email that J. Crew sent me had a subject line that read…

Screen Shot 2017-04-02 at 4.29.46 PM

50% off clearance?? Clearance items are already marked down, but add 50% off of that?! How could you not want to click on that link? Once I saw 50% off, all I could think about were the things that I needed, and sadly the things that I didn’t need. 50% off was reason enough for me to click on the link and then from there I just felt like I was obligated to buy something. This is a very effective email and their call to action was very efficient.

Screen Shot 2017-04-02 at 4.28.50 PM

In this specific email, there is no room for miscommunication, customers know exactly what they are getting into, the biggest deal of the season. The customers already know what types of styles and fashion are included in the clearance section, so I don’t think there should have been more content included in the email. This was an email that I think was sent out to the entire database. There were no male or female specifics again.

This email did more than just accomplish their initial task, it did way more. I was in need of some new office essentials. Pants, shirts, socks and anything else you could think of, I added to my cart. A deal like this comes along once every blue moon. With the sun coming out and the weather finally getting nice, it was time to spruce up the wardrobe and add some style essentials. J. Crew always makes sure that their customers are up to date with the latest and greatest. Getting an email three times a week with a different deal in every email just goes to show ya that you can’t beat email marketing. It is cheap, effective and can be sent out within a blink of an eye.

When it comes to fashion it is all about staying on top of your game. With the help of J. Crew and their products and sales, fashion doesn’t have to come at a cost. You can own fashion without fashion owning you.

Easy Steps to Improve SEO

For a small, first time blogger like myself, SEO is something that I need to focus on every time I post a new blog. In order for my fashionable insight to be heard around the world it is essential to be on the first page of Google. As the great Michael Pepe says, “If you’re not on the first page of Google, you do not even exist!” One day, if I’m lucky enough, I’ll be on page 1 just like Michael Pepe’s famous blog. In the mean time, there are a few easy steps I can focus on so that people look to my blog just as much they look to GQ.

SEO is what will put my blog on page 1 or page 20. It is important to focus on the small things, the things that won’t break the bank, the things that are so small but make such a large difference when discussing relevance.

It is important to think as the consumer. What will the person doing the search type into the search bar in order to get to the page they desire?

Keywords are something so simple, but something so effective in the world of digital marketing. Google, perusal are the King of keywords. Google AdWords, allows for individuals to recognize the words that are searched more than others. For me, this means I can search something that I wish to write about, and then Google will generate words that are searched the most. Through the use of this tool, I will be able to incorporate words that are relevant for each and every blog post.

Screen Shot 2017-02-26 at 1.19.46 PM.png

Having a number of different pages on my blog means that the URL needs to be specific per each page. Having specifics located in the URL allows for easier key word mapping. Each page on my blog has to be relevant with key words (as stated above) that are searched. When the URL has the specific keywords within the URL, then it makes the search related to what is on the pages. The URL allows for keyword mapping, which makes the traffic on the specific pages higher and the volume increases. Having a specific URL is another element to increasing SEO.

The underlined portion of this URL brings the users right to the personal style section of my blog.

Title Tag:

The title is the most important part of the blog. It has to incorporate every little thing that has been discussed in the earlier portion of this post. It is truly important to make the title short and because it is so short, I can use the keywords that generate the best results. Having the title in bold also carries a great deal of weight when increasing SEO. Making the title tag short, while incorporating relevant key words will allow for my page to creep up when talking about page rank. If the title is relevant, bolded and loaded with keywords the SEO has no where to go, but up!

Having strong hyperlinks embedded into my blog posts will increase the relevance to my site. Having external links that are appropriate to the content being discussed will increase my sites rank. Linking sites like GQ, H&M and other relevant fashion sites in my posts will increase the credibility of my content and may start to attract readers to my site. If my SEO was to let’s say increase to be on the same level as GQ, then people may start to see that my page has links associated with a great men’s fashion site and it would increase my page strength.

The name of the game when it comes to blogs is content, content, content. It is important that I write about things that are relevant to the audience that I am trying to reach. If I write something that people aren’t interested in, or I write about something that is so outdated that I should retire before my blogging career really picks up, then no one will go to my site. The traffic to my site will be slim to none. Content is key.

Along with content, page speed is something that needs to be considered. Page speed is important because my site could have the most innovative and up-to-date content on the market. But if my site won’t load fast enough for people to read it, then they are going to go somewhere else. If the page is slow to load then the bounce rate is going to be extremely high. People are going to click my page, and if it doesn’t load fast enough then they are going to bounce out of my page and onto the next one. If the bounce rate is high, that is going to drastically decrease the SEO. That tells Google that the site is irrelevant and people are unsatisfied with it.

Out of curiosity, I searched page speed and Google (not surprised at all) had a page that allows users to see the page speed of any website. Google Page Speed Insights allows for users to paste in a URL and then see the speed of the site and how to fix it.

This made me curios, so I looked at my site and saw that there were a few things that I needed to change in order to be more successful.

These quick and easy steps to increase SEO aren’t going to cost me any money. They are little things that I can tweak that will help my SEO. These little tweaks are going to put me on course to dethrone GQ and rise to the top of Men’s Style. Improving SEO could one day make me a CEO, you truly never know.

Make H&M Your Go-To Store

If you’re trying to ball on a budget, look no further than H&M. This store is up to date on the most current fashion trends, while keeping their prices low. When it comes to anything fashion, from formal wear to casual wear, H&M has you covered. As mentioned in prior blog posts I am a major advocate for this website (they aren’t paying me to say that), because if you’re looking for the most bang for your buck, H&M is the store for you.

In order to bring the most accurate and relevant fashion information to the people, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look at how successful H&M is on the digital side of things. Looking at the traffic their website brings, the conversion once the customer is on the website and how that conversion can be transferred to serious revenue maximization. This little research idea of H&M’s website was sparked by my Digital Marketing Professor, Michael Pepe. In class we looked at Amazon’s website and its’ keys to digital success. So based on that assignment, I thought it would be relevant to look at H&M and see how they stack up in the fashion industry.

The first step in the analysis of a website is to look at the traffic that the website brings in. First, there is this thing called direct traffic. This is when the user types the URL into the search engine and generates a search for a webpage. In H&M’s case, they have a very short and recognizable brand name. This makes the search process much easier for the users because it is so short and recognizable. It is easy to bookmark pages from H&M as well. This enables easy access to old searches and it brings the user directly to the web page.

In today’s market, if a company doesn’t have a mobile app, they are behind the eight ball. Luckily, H&M does have a mobile app. This will allow for customers to shop on the go, and access the most recent trends right from their mobile devices. Up dates are sent right to the user through the app and through email subscription, which allows for the customer to never miss a beat. And in the fashion industry, you need to stay on top of things. You have to be the one to set the trends.

Another way most companies increase their traffic is through paid search and referral traffic. When you google search anything that has to do with fashion there are always paid ads from other companies. But when I google search anything dealing with fashion there were no paid ads from H&M and their page rank was quite low. They may not rely on this type of traffic because they have such a recognizable brand name and they have stores across the country. But maybe if they did participate in this activity, they would have an even higher amount of traffic. But, H&M thrives using direct and unpaid traffic. And in a growing market where there are hundreds of clothing retailers, it is important to stay simple and provide the customer with an easy and efficient web experience.

All this traffic means nothing if the website cannot convert individuals into making a purchase that will generate money for the company. Having a website that is easy to navigate will allow for the customer to have a much easier time in the purchasing process. H&M has a wide variety of clothing, which would make one think that navigation would be tough, but because of a very detailed side bar, the search can easily be broken down which will make it easier to find whatever item of clothing the consumer is looking for. Screen Shot 2017-02-12 at 4.38.23 PM.png

Once you have narrowed down what it is you are looking for in order to give yourself that cutting edge, the options are endless. With different colors, styles and sizes it is pretty hard not to leave H&M without a new hoodie for example, for the cold months.

Screen Shot 2017-02-12 at 4.47.17 PM.png

Something I love about H&M is the “style with” section below the add to cart button. This part of the website looks at the item of clothing you are about to buy and then it pairs it with another item that would go well with it. Whether it is a t-shirt to go under neath the hoodie or an accessory that would compliment the outfit. This section of the website is going to increase revenue for H&M. Not only will the prices draw in the customers, they are going to want to stay on the site because the possibilities are going to be endless. There are easy purchasing options that allows for the free flowing shopping experience that you would get at a store. But with H&M you can stay on your couch, beat the lines and get your fashion staples sent right to your front step, waiting to compliment your already powerful arsenal of clothing.

Screen Shot 2017-02-12 at 4.38.51 PM.png  Screen Shot 2017-02-12 at 4.39.06 PM.png

Having a website that is enjoyable and easy to navigate will turn all of this traffic that H&M receives into  revenue. There is a vast amount of product information when it comes to the on site purchases along with customer information being stored right on the website, adds another layer of ease into the purchasing of fashion essentials. H&M might not be as well noted as Amazon. But in the emerging fashion market because of the sheer simplicity, H&M holds its own and offers the customers with a website where all of the fashion needs can be satisfied in one simple location.

Why You Only Need Ten Shirts in Your Closet

As my style has evolved over the years, I have seen my closet suffer. It gets stuffed and stuffed with the new fashion trend or the latest “fad” that GQ released that year. It has come to the point where I have no more room in my closet, and that’s a problem. There comes a time in every man’s fashion career where he needs to hit the delete button and start over.

Styles come and go, but the classics never die. The classic black, grey, midnight blue or white t-shirts always deserve a spot in any guys closet. When it comes to the fashion essentials, the classic T’s can be worn with anything. You can pair a slick looking black t-shirt with a pair of Levi 511 and some chukka boots for a more casual evening. Or you could dress it up a bit and put on a white t-shirt with a pair of slim black dress pants and complete the outfit with some stylish loafers. Any fashion trend can be completed with these basic weapons in your repertoire

There is no reason to break the bank either. This delete process will help the struggling college student keep up to date on his fashion sense without breaking the bank. Take a look through the closet. I bet there are going to be clothes in there that haven’t been worn since you were a junior in high school. Take them out and make a few different piles. For the nicer clothes make a pile where the clothes can be taken to a consignment store, you can make some extra cash. For the more outdatedclothes, make a pile that can be donated to the salvation army. No sense of throwing them out, help a person in need. Once you have weeded through the mounds of old, outdated clothes, step 1 has been complete. I know it’s going to be hard to part with that Abercrombie and Fitch shirt you used to love so much, but trust me your closet will thank you.

If you’re paying over $15.00 for a shirt, you’re doing it wrong. H&M has all of the essential color ways for basic short sleeved t-shirts. And they only cost $6.99. Just the other day, I went into H&M with the intention on spending no more than $50.00. I walked out with four black t-shirts and sweatshirt for about $49.00. And if I didn’t buy the hoodie, I would have been able to get about three more shirts and I would have stayed within my budget. You need to know the ins and outs. And even though H&M isn’t the best quality, it gets the job done for the price you pay.

There is this saying in the world of fashion, “fashion comes at a cost” this isn’t necessarily true. Breaking the piggy bank for a $450.00 Gucci shirt is just dumb. With the outlets and retail options that have saturated the fashion market today, there is no need to feel guilty about buying clothes. There are ways to get the essentials and get them for a good deal. People don’t need to know you spent $6.99 on a shirt. If you rock the shirt, they won’t even think twice about the price. They will be too busy picking their jaws up from the floor to even think to ask that question. Keep the closet filled with the bare necessities. If you have ten shirts in your closet, that’s a good start. Keep it simple. Keep it clean. And keep it basic. You will be turning heads in no time.
